Prepping – Apocalypse Gift Giving

Okay, today’s post is a bit of a cheat, but what can I say. I like to window shop, even when the window is Amazon. LOL!

There are a ton of items out there that would make excellent gifts for the Prepper in your life. I hope you find some of these to be of use.

It’s just a little list. It’s one I think is worthwhile looking into. Create your own. If you have young ‘uns or teens, give them a Get Home bag for part of their stocking. Plan out your garden for next year and get all the seeds as stocking stuffers. Heck, get seeds you can start indoors now, and plant outside when it gets warmer.

There are some items that are “always buy” in my opinion, like the zip ties and thermal blankets. No matter how many you have, more is always a good thing. Also in that list would be paracord on the roll, small first aid kits, rain ponchos that fit in a purse… There are so many ideas.

Happy holidays, folks. No matter what you celebrate, this is a month full of holy days, and may each of you find something soul comforting over this month.

Thermal blankets can really save your bacon in an accident situation.

I travel the Cascade passes occasionally, and I always have a few stashed in the car. Even with wintertime snow slide control, they can still be unpredictable.

Interestingly, every fall, the WaDOT puts out tall locator poles for the snow plows so they know where the ends of the guard rails and other road side objects are.

They also color code the ends of some of them with red and green reflective tape. If you have to stop on the pass, pick a section of road between two GREEN marked poles. They mark of areas where there aren’t any slide chutes above the road. Red ones indicate the beginning and end of known slide chutes.

Of course, I always have a change of clothes, Sorel snow boots, big black garbage sacks, regular blankets, food, water, a propane torch, first aid kit, trauma dressings, ACE wraps, a small axe, and a tarp, some cordage, a collapsible shovel, kitty litter, and even in this day and age, ACTUAL ROAD FLARES.

I’ve had a few occasions where there was a bad wreck around a corner, (lots of winding roads and corners on those passes,) where no amount of bright flashlight waving would slow down accident site bound traffic, even with the car four way lights flashing away…

Road flares placed on the shoulder would pretty much always do the trick, and are also pretty much guaranteed fire starters if needed.

BTW, SAM splints are COOL!! That reminds me, I have to get some for my stash…

They beat the snot out of the wire ones.

    1. The cool thing about SAM splints is that they do not have to be removed by ER techs in order to take x-rays. This means less pain for the patient, and less fuss and muss for the staff. 🙂

  3. A generic goodie box of the basics would be nice. I know I would appreciate a couple cases of canned goods, a bucket of different sizes of batteries, an assortment of peanut butter and jellies, a couple packs of socks or a couple of new gas cans (filled of course – but you’d really have to love me for that one). Nothing fancy but incredibly useful. Why not? And for hubby a delightful assortment of (fill in the blank) for his toys.

Cyalume Glowsticks – They still put out decent light years after the expiration date. My definition of decent is being able to see well enough to make it through a house full of toys (both dog and human) in the dead of night without stepping on one.

    1. I’ve actually been thrilled with the solar lights I’ve gotten. I’ve had them six years or more now, and they still charge up and last a whole evening, even when I put them in “disco” mode (mine switches colors at intervals and we sometimes do that when we are being silly and drinking). 🙂

light sticks-I like the red ones, also keep them in the freezer. even if you use one for a short time, put it in the freezer and you can take it out and continue to use it.
solar lights-motion sensor ones, some of the smaller (cheaper)outdoor ones will come on with the wind..

I had several 1×1 and 1 x 2 foot sheets of a flexible vinyl plastic I used to use in our trailer when camping.

They would provide enough light even at 2am to see well enough to avoid tripping over something left on the floor.

No batteries required. Pretty much unlimited recharge ability.

I did hunt around a bit until I found the highest light output for the longest duration. Not cheap, but rare earth based stuff usually isn’t.
