Two weeks ago, at the Republican Party of Texas convention in Houston, this movement crossed a line ten years in the making. The dust has settled now, and I want to tell you what it actually meant.
A decade ago, the party establishment stacked the committee and gaveled us down to keep Texas independence from ever reaching the convention floor. This year, they had nothing left to stack and nothing left to gavel. The independence planks we wrote are in the platform, and the people who signed our pledge are inside the party now, not locked out of it.
Let me show you how far that ran. Plus a couple of things since then that say the ground is still moving.
Ten years ago they gaveled us down. This year it was settled.
We came to the convention this year, and for the first time the establishment had no trick left to keep independence off the floor. It was already in the platform.
Why it matters: Here’s what that distance means. A decade ago, we brought independence resolutions from counties all across Texas, and the party bosses reached for the only power they had left. They stacked the committee. They gaveled the vote down. They kept the question off the floor and told the press we were a curiosity. This year, the delegates kept both independence planks we wrote, word for word. Texas First Pledge signers now hold the chair, the vice chair, and seats on the committee that runs the party. Our booth was one of the busiest in the hall. The fringe doesn’t run the building.
– Both planks stayed word for word. The independence plank still calls on the Legislature to pass the referendum bill we’ve pushed for years.
– The new party chair and the new vice chair both signed the Texas First Pledge.
– A decade ago they treated us as a problem to manage. This year, TEXIT wasn’t even the most controversial thing in the room.
The New York Times took independence seriously. Then a historian reached for the question.
The New York Times ran a long feature this month on Americans who want out. Their Pacific Northwest bureau chief walked through the movements: Cascadia in the Northwest, Greater Idaho, Alberta’s coming referendum, organizers in Texas and California and New Mexico. Her read was plain. The conversation is real now, it crosses the old left-right line, and the people in it feel unrepresented enough to talk openly about redrawing the map. A paper of record treating that as a live question is its own kind of news.
The better moment came from outside the movement. Brion McClanahan is a historian of the Constitution and the president of the Abbeville Institute. He spent the better part of an hour on his show working through the Times piece, paragraph by paragraph. And when he reached for the cleanest way to frame the whole debate, he reached for a question I’ve been asking for years. His words: “everything you know now, would you join the United States today? Most people say no. So why are we suffering? Why are we tolerating it? It’s the question.”
He called it the question. The definite article. On his own.
What this means: I didn’t put that in his mouth. He walked through movements all across the spectrum and decided mine was the one that cuts to the center. When people outside the movement start borrowing your frame to think, the fringe label stops meaning much. You’re setting the terms.
The founders wanted hard money. An independent Texas would finish the job.
Here’s a part of the case people forget. For generations after the founding, the dollar was the strongest long-term currency on earth, with almost no inflation. Then Washington started pulling the silver out of the coins, and finally cut the last tie to gold for good.

The founders would have seen it coming. Washington, in the middle of the Revolution, wrote that a wagon load of paper money would barely buy a wagon load of provisions. Jefferson, the man who wrote the Declaration, called paper money the ghost of money, not money itself. They had lived through the collapse of the Continental, and they wanted a currency that held its value.
That history is a blueprint. Texas is already building toward sound money, with a state bullion depository and gold-backed instruments of its own. An independent Texas would finish what the founders started.
What this means: This is the pattern in everything we do. Build the independent Texas now, one piece at a time, so the vote is the last step instead of the first. The founders already drew up the money part.

They stacked it and gaveled us down to keep us out. Now the planks we wrote are in the platform, and the people who signed our pledge won seats inside the party. None of that happened because of me. It happened because Texans like you decided to be counted, and kept deciding it. So decide it again.
Ten years ago they called us a curiosity. Since the convention, a historian who has never been part of this movement called my question the question, on a show built around thinking for yourself. A poll didn’t move. The ground did. You already know the question. You already know your answer. The only thing left is to make sure Texas gets to give its answer at the ballot box. That’s the whole job now. Let’s go finish it.
