Unfortunately the FAA may object to what he did.
It depends. There are a LOT of rules regarding who can fly a drone, and where it can be flown. Spying on people is generally frowned upon in most states. So the FAA might side with the drone pilot in this one. 🙂
Did you mean to say, the FAA might side with the boater (or against the drone pilot) on this one?
Also, you are correct; there are a LOT of rules and local laws about flying drones.
For example, Sunriver, Oregon — a high-desert resort town in the middle of the state — prohibits the takeoff and landing of drones without approval from the Sunriver Owners Association General Manager (the police or fire departments flying their drones as part of their duties are exempted). It’s a Class A offense, subject to a $2,500 fine and loss of recreation access privileges for the first offense, and it doubles for every subsequent offense.
Resort and tourist-y areas, airports, sports arenas/venues, etc., do NOT f#$k around with stupid stuff that affects their operations.
That moron on the boat committed a federal felony. It’s highly illegal to mess with aircraft in flight. And legally, drones are aircraft.
good example of technology making people stupid…. IMO it would be smart to ask if its ok to fly around and take photos… If a drone showed up over my property I might, MIGHT “discourage” who ever is flying it from hanging around.. out in public spaces like this video it could be more difficult to ask permission but youse pays yer money an take yer chances…

While there are rules regarding drones, shooting at one is going to be illegal in about 99.99% of instances. However….that was a good shot by anyone’s standards. And there was a significant element of luck involved.
