Silent Forest in spring with beautiful bright sun rays - wanderlust

The Silence

Ally has an event at the Fort this weekend. I drove her up Friday to stay the next two nights.

We arrived after dark. The moon was bright, the skies clear.

Ordinarily, visiting the fort is stepping back into a bustling place where I have so much to do.

Tonight it was silence. There was nobody but Ally and I.

We got to listen to silence. It was wonderful.

It was dark. Walking through the entrance in the dark is different. The shadows are longer. The palisade, taller, more imposing.

I stood there for a while, thinking of what it would have been like to stand sentry in the dark. My eyes adjusting to the moonlight, watching for the waving of the grass. Listening for anything disturbing the sleep of the fauna.

It is a beautiful memory.

    Well, darkness…

At the moment the moon is very bright. Last night, when I let the dog out for evening ablutions, the moon was so bright I thought I had left the yard lights on.

Anyway, yes. Darkness and quiet are slowly disappearing from our world. It can be a treat to find them again.

“There was nobody but Ally and I.”… take “Ally and” out of the sentence and read it.

Friday nights were generally quiet and peaceful at the Civil War reenactments.

Some days I really miss doing those events.

  4. It was incredibly peaceful up there. Right up until my tummy went south and I had to call Chris to come get me at 11pm. That part wasn’t so great. And I missed my entire damn event. Argh.

But… before that happened, and after Chris left, I was standing outside. The Beaver Moon was bright, hanging directly over the fort. I only have my phone, so I didn’t bother trying to get pictures, but man, I wish I could have. It was gorgeous. And silent. No birds at the time. Far enough from the river that I couldn’t hear anything splashing around down there. Just… peace and quiet.

I wish I’d gotten to enjoy it.
