Random Thoughts as I Grow Older
Wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes; come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller!
Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven’t met yet!

This is such a bullsh!t talking point. It’s extremely unlikely the rifle has no serial number.

Remember that we’re talking about a rifle that was probably manufactured in Germany. The American law mandating serial numbers on firearms wouldn’t apply, but that doesn’t automatically mean it has no serial number.

I don’t know if Germany had a law requiring serial numbers when this rifle was made, but at least three possibilities are within the realm of reasonableness:
1. A serial number was added to the rifle later, probably in America.
2. The German manufacturer would have serialized it for their own purposes (i.e. quality control).
3. If the rifle was part of German government/military stock, it would likely have been serialized for tracking and issuance.

#1 is the most likely, as it’s chambered in .30-06, a distinctly American cartridge, and Mausers weren’t originally chambered in .30-06. It would have been re-barreled here in the U.S., and a serial number probably added at that time.

If you read carefully, the NY Post article never outright says that this rifle has no serial number; the closest they get is to say that Robinson “knew it was untraceable” — right before quoting his text message saying he didn’t know if it had a serial number, but if it did it wouldn’t trace to him. Those are VERY different things.

My opinion: The entire article was written and published to instill fear of untraceable “ghost guns” and pre-1968 firearms that may or may not have serial numbers. These are popular as collectibles and as hunting and sporting rifles, not personal or home defense weapons.

IOW: Hey Fudds! It’s your turn in the barrel! You didn’t really think they’d leave your “huntin’ guns” alone forever, did you?

(In Matt Bracken’s Enemies Foreign and Domestic series, this is about where the fed-gov banned “sniper scopes” on rifles. Don’t discount the possibility of that being proposed.)
