Friday Feedback

SCOTUS

Trump keeps winning at the Supreme Court. There was an 8-1 opinion in his favor this week. With only the DEI Hire dissenting.

Violence In the Streets

There were two events where armed terrorists decided to shoot at federal agents.

Compared to the Dallas, TX, shooter a few years ago, this is barely making a ripple in the news.

Stay strapped. Keep your head on a swivel. Stay out of stupid places at stupid times with stupid people.

Evil

The flash floods in Texas and New Mexico have claimed multiple lives. Parents will never see their children alive again.

There are far too many people in the socials going, “Good, they deserved it.”

These people are evil. They sicken me.

TDS, Lies

People have been blaming Trump for the tragedy in Texas. I’ve heard that it was Trump’s fault because the fully manned weather service was not properly staffed. That he defunded the early warning system. That he hasn’t gone to Texas, like Biden went to NC.

Except that Trump was in NC before Biden. Trump has been in contact with the Texas state government. He has offered all help possible, and the federal government had responded, was rescuing people within hours of Trump learning of the tragedy.

These people are nearly evil. If they had the brains of an amoeba, they would be evil.

Safe Travels

My wife has returned from her vacation. Happy dances throughout the house.

Sharpen That Tool

Wednesday, I was cutting a mortise. Because of the style, I cut two partial cross cuts, then knocked out the waste. This created a mortise that was intentionally to small.

The mortise is then trimmed to size with a chisel. While this started fine, it really wasn’t working as I expected.

Thursday, I needed to finish trimming those mortises. Before I did that, I ran the same chisel through the sharpening pattern.

When I went to cut that end grain, the chisel shaved a piece so thin I could see through it.

I need to spend more time keeping my tools sharp.

Shortly, I will need to plane the top of the frame flat. This will require me to use the jack plane or joiner plane. Before I do so, I’m going to spend still more time making sure those plane irons are razor sharp.

Woodworking Tools

The tools you need to make tools. My workbench frame is nearly completed. I am currently adding bracing. But I can clamp boards to the top of this frame to do work.

Planing a short piece of lumber flat two days ago took about an hour and was a chore the entire tim.

I clamped a board to the top of the frame with a plane stop in it. With this in place, it took just a few minutes to smooth and flatten a brace. This workbench is a good height for me, and it is a joy to work on.

Question of the Week

When you look in your holster drawer, what brand of holster do you see that you should not have purchased?

What holster brand have you found to be good for you, and why?

On sharp tools: one benefit I’ve seen pointed out occasionally is that very sharp tools are safer. The reason is that they require less force, so it’s easier to control your hand and the tool when using it.

On holsters, I have only bought one, a Side Guard OWB holster. I went there because I wanted a custom-fit holster for my Boberg XR-9, and he is one of the few who makes those. Excellent fit and workmanship.

My S&W .357 came with a holster, don’t remember the brand, that looks good — but I can’t use it because it’s left-handed and I am not.

“Best” simple owb pancake style holster I’ve found is Vedder. They have a wide variety of guns they can mold for, and they make holsters for a lefty.

my current pistol of choice is the FN 509 Midsize tactical. I carry it both concealed (in the above listed Vedder) or in Competition where I’m using a Dara holster.

Again, because they make one that fits that gun in a lefty model.

Holsters I “regret” – Alien Gear hybrid. Disliked it right from the start, and have never actually carried with it.

Also a Galco “Miami Classic” shoulder holster for a 1911. Hey, be gentle, was my first gun, first holster and close to 30 years ago.

Anyone who EDCs a firearm will have a drawer FILLED with holsters that promised much and delivered little. Ones that they tried because they were ” NEW and IMPROVED”, but didn’t perform as desired. Ones that were “cutting edge”- – – not. There are those that work well with specific clothes. Ones that you thought you’d just give it a try just ‘cuz it might be better – – – nope. Finally, the tried and true holster that you reach for every day, your old comfortable friend, your EDC holster that one that you settled on after many trials.
I moved a year ago and divested myself of at least 50 various holsters I acquired over the years before the move. I have found 1 IWB holster, in 2 sizes, that fits all of my carry pistols – I have several as back-ups now. I have 1 OWB holster that fits my EDC pistols. Both are simply formed leather holsters.
    however,
I do have 1 other style of holster that is relatively unique. A magnetic holster made by JM4 in Abilene, Texas (https://jm4tactical.com). It can be either an OWB or an IWB holster, depending on which side of your body you wear it. It consists of 2 round magnets. One in the holster itself and one in the flap that goes over your waistband or belt. It works with sweatpants as well.
In addition, it can be attached to anything steel. My wife hangs hers on the refrigerator when she is cooking. We also keep one hanging near the back door with a 22 revolver loaded with birdshot, used for rattlesnakes
    Not everyone, but useful

only holster I ever hated was an Uncle Mikes shoulder rig. never fit right even after multiple adjustments.
I have a few leather, a couple kydex holsters
current every day one is a We the People for the Kimber. replaced the belt clip once in 7 years.

    Holster:
Worst was a no-name from amazon. Useless is a kind way of describing it. Second worst was an Uncle Mike’s with a passive retention system. The system made it damned near impossible to draw without yanking so hard the gun would fly out of your hand. You needed to rotate the butt of the gun toward your body, while drawing at EXACTLY the right moment. Total fail. I keep it as an example of how NOT to design a holster.

Best carry holster I think I have personally used is a Stealtgear IWB. Holds my carry pistol steady with enough retention that it does not move around. Tension is adjustable. Drawing from it takes a small amount of practice, but that is true of any rig.
